Experiences in an Imagined World looks at the lenses that stand between our inner selves and the world around us. These lenses are made of our perspectives, beliefs, attitudes, knowledge, and values. As we look through them, they distort and morph the “real world” – what we see is not what is there but our own imagined reality. The result is that we all see a world obscured and distorted in an individual way. In this series, the plants represent the inner self and the abstract forms and background are our distorted view of the world. The self, here, explores this blurred world, each from its own perspective – some curious, some captured, some tentative, some brave.

Our memories are unreliable. Experiences are turned over and analysed, catalogued, and revisited, only to be modified again. Memories of an Imagined Life is a series of my own memories. Each experience, represented by the leaves, is changed, decomposed, reshaped by my own process of remembering. The abstract shapes in the background represent my beliefs, attitudes, perceptions, perspective, knowledge, and values. My memories are suspended amongst these: falling through them, bouncing off them, wedging between them, navigating through them. Through this interaction I curate an imagined life that I remember as real, knowing that this remembered “reality” will continue to change with time.
